Marine insurance

Our marine practice comprises a specialist team of lawyers with an established reputation and years of experience acting for and advising regional and global clients operating across Asia Pacific. We have a very active marine insurance practice – which complements Kennedys’ regional and global offering as a leading specialist insurance law firm.

We are regularly instructed by insurer clients on matters relating to marine cargo, transport liability, hull, war risks, P&I, ports and terminals and marine cyber risk policies. We handle a broad range of work that includes coverage advice, defence of third-party liability claims, subrogated recovery actions, resolution of disputes through litigation, arbitration and mediation where we are regularly engaged to supervise and manage local counsel in proceedings outside Singapore, economic sanctions and regulatory compliance advice, and policy drafting and localisation.

On the ’dry’ side of shipping, we handle disputes under common dry bulk and tanker charterparty forms, bills of lading and other contracts for the carriage of goods by sea, road, air and multimodal transport, guarantees, marine insurance and contracts for the construction, and sale and purchase of ships.

We have experience handling ‘wet’ shipping matters with members of the team having advised on aspects of several major marine casualties including MOL COMFORT, HYUNDAI 105 and BUM CHIN. We advise on issues relating to collisions, damage to fixed and floating objects, groundings, salvage, unsafe port claims, general average and tonnage limitation. We also have experience handling personal injury claims in the shipping sector, including catastrophic injuries.
